The play is one of only two secular plays of the era and is one of very few with stage directions that include musical cues.  The title means &#8220;And the bells of the town ring without ceasing during the attack.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Instrumentation of the piece is piccolo, flute 1 &#038; 2, clarinet 1 &#038; 2, horn 1 &#038; 2, trumpet 1 &#038; 2, trombone, tuba, percussion (tubular bells, xylophone, glockenspiel, tom-tom), violins, viola, cello, double bass.
